The Way Forward in 2009
As the seventh year of the U.S. occupation of Iraq continues, let us all seek ways to strengthen each other’s work to bring about our common goal of Peace for Iraq.
It’s good news that President Barack Obama has called for the removal of “combat troops” from Iraq by August 31, 2010. However, the real possibility of a “re-designation” process going on that requires tens of thousands of soldiers to remain in Iraq, is a very serious concern. While President Obama has called for complete troop “redployment” from Iraq by the end of 2011, it remains to be seen whether or not this will actually be carried out.
And then there are the matters that have not been addressed well by the new Administration. The issues of U.S. military bases, control of Iraqi oil, the ongoing use of military contractors (mercenaries), reparations to the people of Iraq, persistent outbreaks of violence within Iraq, millions of refugees and internally displaced Iraqis, and the availability of humanitarian aid are all very serious matters that the Peace for Iraq movement must address with the Obama Administration and the U.S. Congress, in the coming months.
On April 9th, President Obama made an appropriations request for $83.4 billion to pay for more war-making in Iraq and Afghanistan this year.
It is reported that the U.S. Congress will accelerate their efforts to provide more money for the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as provide $1.4 billion in economic aid and $400 million for counter-insurgency assistance to Pakistan.
A vote on war funding is expected in the House of Representatives in mid-May. Our members of Congress must hear from constituents before then.
Voices of opposition must be heard!
Watch this website for more details on the war funding request and what We The People can do to try to stop it.

The Way Forward in 2009
During the sixth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, hundreds of events and actions took place across the country in support of the people of Iraq and in opposition to the U.S. military occupation of Iraq. As the seventh year of the U.S. occupation of Iraq continues, let us all seek ways to support and strengthen each other’s work to bring about our common goal of Peace for Iraq.
On April 29-30, 2009 (the 100th day of the Obama Administration), we invite you to participate with people from across the country in the Christian Peace Witness for Iraq in Washington, D.C.
We are pleased that President Obama has called for the removal of “combat troops” from Iraq by August 31, 2010. However, we are very concerned about the very real possibility of a “re-designation” process going on that requires tens of thousands of soldiers to remain in Iraq. While President Obama has called for complete troop “redployment” from Iraq by the end of 2011, we remain equally concerned about whether or not this will actually be carried out.
The work of The Declaration of Peace clearly must continue throughout 2009. The way forward requires our continued diligence and the mutual support of the work at hand.
