“Peace Week 2008” in Bloomington is happening now until Sept. 27, 2008.

“Conflict is inevitable. Peace is possible.”

Throughout the week, a wide range of events at numerous locations will address Peace-building.

Bloomington Peace Action Coalition is co-sponsoring three events, all on Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2008.


The “Eyes Wide Open” Memorial Boots Display

Wednesday – 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Monroe County Courthouse lawn

Walnut Street and Kirkwood Avenue, Bloomington

This thought-provoking display brings home the reality of the human costs of the U.S. war on Iraq. Literature will be available.

Co-sponsored by American Friends Service Committee, Bloomington Friends, Bloomington Peace Action Coalition, Unitarian Universalist Just Peace Task Force, and Indiana Students Against War.


“Peace!” Demonstration

Wednesday – 5:00 to 6:00 p.m.

Monroe County Courthouse Square

Walnut Street and Kirkwood Avenue, Bloomington

All are invited to participate in this week’s silent Peace Vigil.

We stand for “Peace for Iraq!” and for the establishment of a national Department of Peace. Signs will be provided.

Co-sponsored by Bloomington Peace Action Coalition and the Indiana Campaign for a U.S. Department of Peace.


“Effects of and Recovery from Violence” Community Presentation

Wednesday – 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

First Christian Church ~ Great Hall on the 2nd floor

205 E. Kirkwood Avenue, Bloomington

Victims of war and/or violence will speak about their ordeals and how they have been able to overcome their experiences/ losses.

Community member speakers will be:

• Toby Strout of Middle Way House, discussing the impact of domestic violence

• Victor Gasana, formerly of Rwanda, who lost his entire family in the conflicts there

• Dr. Zaineb Istrabadi, an Iraqi Muslim offering her unique perspective on the war in Iraq

• Rawa Pendergrass, whose father is one of the “disappeared” from Baghdad

Bloomington Peace Action Coalition organizers Timothy Baer and Christine Glaser will speak about the tragic impacts of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Iraq and how to move toward Peace for Iraq.

IN Campaign for a US Dept. of Peace coordinator Gail Merrill will offer proposals to address issues of war and violence.

Gretchen Clearwater, former Congressional candidate, will serve as moderator for this event.
