See Who Has Signed the Congressional Declaration of Peace

Activists across the country have been meeting with members of congress to ask them to sign the pledge. Nine members have signed thus far: Rep. Tammy Baldwin (WI); Rep. Earl Blumenauer (OR); Rep. Danny Davis (IL); Rep. Sam Farr (CA); Rep. Chaka Fattah (PA); Rep. Barbara Lee (CA); Rep. John Lewis (GA); Rep. Jan Schakowsky (IL); Rep. Lynn Woolsey (CA).

Declaration of Peace volunteers hand delivered the congressional pledge to the offices of every member of Congress on Friday, September 15 and Monday, Sept. 18. They need to hear from you asking them to sign the pledge!

Make That Call!

In your calls, ask your Congressional Representative and Senators to: Sign the Declaration of Peace Congressional Pledge [PDF], committing them to work for a comprehensive, principled and rapid plan for peace. We are organizing these Call-In Days in coordination with lobby efforts of the Friends Committee for National Legislation (FCNL) and Camp Democracy:

  • CALL-IN DAY 1: September 11: Thank you for making those calls!
  • CALL-IN DAY 2: September 19: Camp Democracy’s Lobby Day in support of Rep McGovern’s bill to stop military spending on the war in Iraq.
  • CALL-IN DAY 3: September 26: Declaration of Peace actions in the Capital, calling for an end to the occupation and beginning of a concrete plan for peace in Iraq.

We need to flood every single Congressional office with phone calls and messages urging an immediate call for peace! To make this day as successful as possible, we’re asking you and your community to do the following:

  • Send an email to your members today letting them know about the planned call-in days. Feel free to forward this message.
  • Hand out fliers (PDF) promoting the call-in day, and distribute it widely.
  • Forward our email alert about the call-in day to your email lists. We will send out an alert early in the morning, Sept 19 and 26.

Here is a scipt you can follow when you make your call:

Ask to speak to the Legislative Aide in charge of Iraq policy. If you get their voicemail, ask them to call you back.

Polls show that a majority of Americans, Iraqis and US troops are ready for Congress and the president to set a timetable to end the war and bring the Troops home. I am calling to encourage Rep. (or Senator) X to listen, and work for a comprehensive, principled and rapid plan to end the war.

Specifically, I am asking Rep (or Senator) X to sign the Declaration of Peace Congressional pledge, which was hand-delivered to your office yesterday. The pledge asks members of Congress to support these bills:

In the U.S. House:
H.R. 4232: End the War in Iraq Act Introduced by Rep. Jim McGovern (D-MA)
H.Con.Res.348: Expressing the sense of Congress with respect to accomplishing the mission in Iraq Introduced by Rep. Mike Thompson (D-CA)
H.Con.Res.197: No Permanent Bases in Iraq Introduced by Rep. Barbara Lee (D-CA)
In the U.S. Senate:
S.Con.Res.93: Expressing the sense of Congress with respect to accomplishing the mission in Iraq Introduced by Sen. Tom Harkin (D-IA)

Will the Representative (or Senator) support the Declaration of Peace?

Will the Representative (or Senator) support any of the legislation I mentioned?

Report Back!
Please let us know how your Representative and Senators respond to these calls! It is especially important if any offices tell you that they will sign the Declaration of Peace! We will need to follow-up with them! Report on your calls to Congress@declarationofpeace.org
