Voices of opposition to ongoing war and military occupation must be heard!

If you haven’t already written your member of Congress about the 2009 Supplemental Appropriations …

E-mail your Representative today!

The full House is expected to vote on the $96.7 billion “2009 Supplemental Appropriations” bill as early as next Wednesday, May 13th.

We have allies in the House of Representatives — like Lynn Woolsey, Barbara Lee, Dennis Kucinich and many others who will vote “NO” on any more war funding.

We must try to persuade our members of Congress to also vote against the “2009 Supplemental Appropriations” bill. It is important that we ALL write and call our Representative in the next couple days.

Remember: Stopping the funding is the surest way to promptly change war policy, and initiate troop withdrawal.

Talking Points:

  1. Congressional approval of war funding perpetuates destructive military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Lasting peace will not come through military occupation.

  2. Congress should insist on comprehensive exit strategies for Iraq and Afghanistan that invest in long-term diplomatic, humanitarian, and economic development assistance that will lead to peace and stability in those countries.

  3. Funding for war and military occupation — and funding for diplomatic, humanitarian and other benevolent efforts must be separated. It is disingenuous and deceptive on the parts of the Obama Administration and Congress to combine these.

  4. The “2009 Supplemental Appropriations” bill provides for a high level of U.S. troops in Iraq for the duration of FY 2009. What about the promised withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraqi cities by June 30, 2009?

  5. Funding military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan exacerbates animosity towards the United States and leads to violent responses toward the U.S. and its allies.

  6. Approving more than $84 billion for military operations in foreign countries when there are so many pressing domestic needs is morally and financially irresponsible.

More requests for more funding for war and occupation have followed President Obama’s request for more funding for war and occupation.

Tens of billions of dollars for war and occupation are being asked for by a president who promised to “end the war in Iraq”.

On April 9, 2009, President Obama made a supplemental appropriations request for $83.4 billion, with $75.8 billion going for continuing military operations and equipment replacement in Iraq and Afghanistan.

On Thursday, May 7, 2009, the House Appropriations Committee submitted their finalized 2009 Supplemental Appropriations for Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan and Pandemic Flu totaling $96.7 billion , and significantly increasing the funding for war-making and military occupation to over $84 billion.

If approved by Congress, the supplemental funding would bring the costs for war and occupation in Iraq and Afghanistan for FY 2009 to more than $153 billion. According to the Congressional Research Service, this supplemental war funding would push the costs of the two wars to almost $1 trillion since September 2001. And this is above and beyond the “normal” expenditures of hundreds of billions of dollars for the Dept. of Defense yearly budgets.

It must be pointed out that while the “2009 Supplemental Appropriations” bill contains needed beneficial items like economic development and agriculture programs in Afghanistan, efforts to strengthen the rule of law in Iraq, humanitarian assistance for Gaza, wildfire suppression, and global efforts to slow the spread of a flu pandemic, all combined, they amount to less than 13% of the total appropriations measure. And the House Appropriations Committee rejected Obama’s request for funding for closing the prison facility at Guantanamo Bay.

Again, more than $84 billion goes to military occupation operations, furthers involvement in Pakistan, and does nothing towards the promised U.S. troop withdrawal from Iraq.

In fact, the opposite is true. The supplemental provides for continuing U.S. troop levels of more than 130,000 soldiers in Iraq through September 2009.

Also on Thursday, the Obama Administration revealed the Pentagon budget for FY 2010 (beginning in October 2009) for $664 billion, with $554 billion going for “basic” military programs and $130 billion specifically for continuing the military occupation of Iraq and accelerating military operations in Afghanistan.

This is a lot of bad news.

But, don’t give up. Let’s address and oppose these measures one step at a time.

Stop the War Funding

Dear Representative … ,

I am writing to let you know that I strongly object to Congress passing the 2009 Supplemental Appropriations bill, which would appropriate more than $84 billion for military spending.

This bill supports the escalation of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, and perpetuates the U.S. military occupation of Iraq, in spite of promises by President Obama for a prompt troop draw down.

Funding for The Declaration of Peace

President Obama’s Funding Request for the U.S. Military Occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan

Report from Christian Peace Witness for Iraq

Funding Peace

Thank you very much to everyone who contributed to last month’s fund appeal. In response to our request for funding from you, $863 was raised.

This nationwide campaign, The Declaration of Peace, has very modest expenses. We only need $4900 per year to meet all of our basic campaign expenses. Believe it or not, our expenses have actually gone down, thanks to a reduction in our webhosting costs. Since its inception in January 2006, The Declaration of Peace has, from month to month, always met its financial responsibilities, thanks to generous contributors like you. However, we have very few recurring contributors. (You know who you are – Thank you!)

Therefore, to ensure that we have the funding needed to continue this year, we must again ask for a donation from you. If you contributed last month, don’t feel that you need to donate again this month. This appeal goes to those who have never donated to The Declaration of Peace, or haven’t given yet in 2009.

Just a reminder: This is a volunteer-run nationwide campaign — your campaign! No one gets paid for our time and effort given to this campaign. All money raised goes toward expenses related to our website, e-blast, and data storage/ processing systems.

We only need $482 more to cover our financial responsibilities for the next two months.

Please help us reach our goal. Contribute what you can: $10 or $100 or anything in between!

Funding War

As most of you are well aware, on April 9, 2009, President Barack Obama made an appropriations request for $83.4 billion to pay for more war-making in Iraq and Afghanistan this year.

It is reported that the U.S. Congress will accelerate their efforts to provide more cash for the occupations of Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as provide $400 million for counter-insurgency assistance to the Pakistani military, and $1.4 billion in economic aid for Islamabad.

A vote on war funding is expected in the House of Representatives in mid-May. Our members of Congress must hear from constituents before then.

Voices of opposition to ongoing war-making and military occupation must be heard!

Next week, we’ll provide more details on the war funding request and what We The People can do to try to stop it.

• Help Iraqis rebuild their country and resettle refugees

• Set a timeline to remove all U.S. military bases and troops from Iraq.

“Healing cannot begin without making it clear that we are sorry for the suffering we caused to millions and millions of Iraqis,” said Rick Ufford-Chase, executive director of the Presbyterian Peace Fellowship. “We must pursue the future well-being of Iraqis with the same vigor we applied to war against them.”

On April 29th, we invite you to gather in Washington, D.C. for worship, witness, and nonviolent action ~ Repenting of U.S. actions in Iraq and insisting that the war be brought to an end.

March 31. 2009: The Way Forward

Dear Declaration of Peace supporter,

Earlier this month, during the sixth anniversary of the U.S. invasion of Iraq, hundreds of events and actions took place across the country in support of the people of Iraq and in opposition to the U.S. military occupation of Iraq. Like most of you, we were involved in organizing and participating in local events and in mobilizing for the March 21st March on the Pentagon.

We are pleased to learn that President Obama has called for the removal of “combat troops” from Iraq by August 31, 2010. But, we are very concerned about the very real possibility of a “re-designation” process going on that allows tens of thousands of soldiers to remain in Iraq. While President Obama has called for complete troop “redployment” from Iraq by the end of 2011, we remain equally concerned about whether or not this will actually be carried out.

And then there are the matters that have not been addressed well by the new Administration.

The issues of U.S. military bases, control of Iraqi oil, the ongoing use of military contractors (mercenaries), reparations to the people of Iraq, persistent outbreaks of violence within Iraq, millions of refugees and internally displaced Iraqis, and the availability of humanitarian aid are all very serious matters that the Peace for Iraq movement must address with the Obama Administration and the U.S. Congress, in the coming months.

The work of The Declaration of Peace clearly must continue throughout 2009. The way forward requires our continued diligence and the mutual support of the work at hand.

As the seventh year of the U.S. military occupation of Iraq continues, The Declaration of Peace will continue to coordinate nationally as we all organize locally. Let us all seek ways to support and strengthen each other’s work to bring about our common goal of Peace for Iraq.

Thank you very much to all who have contributed financially to The Declaration of Peace since its inception three years ago. We greatly appreciate those who have chosen to generously donate on a regular basis!

However, over the course of the past three months, while supporting sixth anniversary events and promoting the work of Iraq humanitarian aid organizations, we have expended all our funds.

Could you please donate $10 or more to help support The Declaration of Peace at this time?

We’re humbly asking for your support.

All of our money comes directly from you. We receive no foundation or other funding, and have no paid organizers.

The Declaration of Peace is a grassroots-driven, volunteer-run national campaign focused on Peace for Iraq.

This is your campaign!

We’re asking for a contribution of $10 or more to keep the campaign secure through 2009.

This is a critical time! We need your support!

Here’s what you’re paying for:

• Hosting and design costs for our website, the public information center of the campaign.

• Our web-based e-advocacy system, with which we send out e-mails to all signers of the Declaration, process online donations, and maintain our signer database.

Your donation does NOT pay for: • Staff time • Office space • Phone bills • Travel costs
