Legislative Action Alert on Iran

DECLARATION OF PEACE LEGISLATIVE ACTION ALERT

PREVENT AN IRAN ATTACK AND OCCUPATION

A U. S. attack on Iran is written into the Bush Administration’s National Security Strategy. (2002) Since October 2006 the Bush Administration has been threatening to attack Iran. As an indication of an acceleration of a “pre-emptive strike” policy, negotiations with Iran were formally terminated by the Bush Administration on January 25th. Furthermore, it has signaled that it may start a ground war campaign due to its unsubstantiated claims that Iran is transporting arms to insurgents within Iraq. Recently Bush gave permission for U. S. soldiers to attack Iranian “operatives” in Iraq. Most dangerous of all is the concern that nuclear “bunker-buster bombs” will be used against Iran.

Scott Ritter, a US Nuclear Weapons Inspector in Iraq prior to the US invasion, observes that Iran is years away from achieving the means to create nuclear power and “at least ten years away from constructing a nuclear weapon.” It is clear that Ritter’s assessment of “Regional Transformation” is the ultimate goal of the Bush Administration. rsonnel, some global allies, or some members of Congress.

A U. S. War with Iran would have catastrophic effects on the Iranian population and environment. It would be a devastating disaster- physical, moral, political, and economics- for Iran, the United States, the Middle East, and the entire world. More than likely, an attack on Iran would broaden and spread the current wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Somalia in incalculable, horrific ways.

It is crucial that the American people to take a strong stand against an attack of Iran!

Two binding Resolutions (Available at www.thomas.loc.gov along with a list of co-sponsors) that directly and/or indirectly affect military action in Iran need co-sponsorship by Representatives in the House.

HR 508 (Sec. 103 repeals the Authorization for use of military force against Iraq – which is being used by the Administration to justify build-up around Iran) and HJR 14. Authored by Representative Walter B. Jones of North Carolina, it would assure that the United States does not go to war on/with Iran without specific Congressional authorization. It has 23 sponsors as of 2-5-07. There is no companion Bill in the Senate to prevent an attack of Iran, but Senator Robert Byrd, a Constitutional expert, is reportedly working on one. Declaration of Peace will update this information regularly, so keep checking our website!
