September 15, 2006

Democratic Congressional candidate Jim Brandt responds to Stop-the-War Ministry Team Request to Sign Congressional Declaration of Peace Pledge

Local group urges candidate to support efforts to end the war in Iraq

LONG BEACH, CA – In response to a meeting with members of the Stop-the-War Ministry Team of First Congregational Church in Long Beach last Tuesday afternoon, Congressional candidate Jim Brandt today signed the Congressional Declaration of Peace Pledge. Mr. Brandt is running as the Democratic candidate for Congress from District 46.

The Declaration of Peace is a statement with eight distinct points that call for withdrawing U.S. Troops from Iraq, rebuilding Iraq and stabilizing the Middle East (www.DeclarationOfPeace.org). The Ministry team is a local group of activists, one of hundreds around the country, who seek Congressional support for the Declaration of Peace and who, if that support is denied, have committed to engage in nonviolent protests and/or civil disobedience throughout the nation.

The Stop-the-War Ministry Team has also met with Rep. Dana Rohrabacher, who is Mr. Brandt’s Republican opponent in the upcoming election. At that meeting, Mr. Rohrabacher expressed agreement with the Ministry Team that the United States should not establish permanent military bases in Iraq, but he refused to sign on to the Pledge, disagreeing with the remaining points.

Describing Tuesday’s meeting with Mr. Brandt, Dr. Robert Kalayjian, who is a local physician, Vice-Moderator of First Congregational Church of Long Beach, and a member of the Ministry Team said, “Jim Brandt is a bit of an enigma. A businessman who suggested that we might liken the Iraq war to a business with a failing product. A good business will cut its losses and walk away from the product. But he also feels strongly and with heart that we will only see more death of Americans and Iraqis if we try to win a losing situation. I also like the fact that he is willing to stand up and take that position while his fellow Democratic Congresspeople keep talking politically and take no position and speak in circles.”

The Congressional Declaration of Peace Pledge is a commitment by Representatives and Senators to support the Declaration of Peace and to cosponsor legislation that will create momentum for a comprehensive plan to end the war and occupation of Iraq.

The pledge specifically asks members of Congress to cosponsor legislation such as H.R.4232 (End the War in Iraq Act of 2005), H.Con.Res.348/S Con Res93 (about military withdrawal and oil control) and H.Con.Res.197 (No Permanent Bases in Iraq).

Currently, local Declaration of Peace teams around the country are meeting with their representatives to secure pledges of support and to inform Congress about the Declaration of Peace project. This project not only involves direct work with Congress but also outreach to communities all over the country supported by nonviolent protests, including civil disobedience, aimed at ending the war.

Mar. 23 - Protesters arrested on eve of vote to fund war

 Body:

By David Whitney and Kim Minugh
March 23, 2007
Sacramento Bee

Story appeared in METRO section, Page B1

As protesters of the Iraq war sat in their district offices reading the names of U.S. troops and civilian Iraqis who have died in the 4-year-old war, Democratic Reps. Doris Matsui and Mike Thompson said Thursday they will cast their votes today for an additional 18 months of war funding.

Thompson, D-St. Helena, and Matsui, D-Sacramento, have been the targets of repeated demonstrations by protesters hoping to persuade them to vote against spending more money on the war and to bring troops home now.

The 52nd consecutive work day of protests in Matsui’s downtown Sacramento office ended Thursday with the arrest of seven demonstrators who refused to leave the lobby at the end of the business day.

George Main, president of the Sacramento chapter of Veterans for Peace, said he and six others were handcuffed by an officer with the Federal Protective Service — the agency that polices federal buildings — in the lobby of Matsui’s office and escorted to a building at 650 Capitol Mall. There, the seven protesters were cited for failure to comply with the lawful order of a police officer and released, Main said.

David Gump, deputy U.S. marshal in Sacramento, said Thursday night that federal officers took protesters into custody and removed them from the Congresswoman’s office.

Matsui and Thompson said they will vote for the $124 billion funding bill that also includes disaster money for farmers hurt by the recent Central Valley freeze and fishermen harmed by the radically shortened salmon season last year, because it calls for bringing the troops home by the fall of 2008.

“I opposed this war from the beginning,” Matsui said in an interview. “It’s been four years. Democrats won the election in part because of all the disillusionment over where the war is going.

“This is not a perfect bill,” she said. “But we have a fixed timetable. I wish it was a quicker withdrawal. But we had to figure out a way to bring along more conservative members of our caucus.”

Thompson, whose Woodland office was occupied by protesters for several hours Thursday as they read from the list of names, said he should be counted as a reluctant vote for the bill.

“My vote is going to be based on how I feel in my heart of hearts,” Thompson said. “I feel it will get us out of Iraq as soon as we can and still protect our troops already there.

“I don’t think this is the bill any of us want to vote for, but it is our best opportunity,” he said.

On a larger scale, he said, today’s vote will send a message to President Bush that “he is not operating in the best interests of the country or the Iraqi people.”

The vote could be close, with most Republicans expected to join a handful of liberal Democrats in opposing it. Republicans object to the timetables, which have drawn the threat of a presidential veto.

Matsui, Thompson and other congressional Democrats received some cover this week from liberal organizations like MoveOn.org and the Council for a Livable World, which circulated letters on Capitol Hill urging approval of the measure.

“Defeat of the legislation will be interpreted by President Bush and Vice President Cheney as giving them a free hand to pursue the Iraq war as they wish,” wrote leaders of the council.

But for Sacramento peace activist Maggie Coulter, protesting in front of the Robert T. Matsui Federal Courthouse, where the congresswoman has her district office, Matsui’s and Thompson’s votes will be a severe disappointment.

“I’m horrified,” Coulter said in an interview on her cell phone. “I am horrified that Democrats, including Matsui and Thompson, are playing games with the lives of U.S. soldiers and Iraqi citizens.”

Coulter said the deadlines in the House bill are more about Democrats winning the hearts of voters than ending the war, because the measure calls for bringing the troops home just before national elections in November 2008.

“It’s a despicable ploy,” Coulter said. “How these two people can say they oppose the war and still vote for this makes me ill.”

Main, a 56-year-old Democrat from Sacramento, chastised Matsui for participating in what he described as “a game of political chicken.”

“I can’t believe the Democratic Party is able to (sacrifice the safety of troops) so they have a better chance of winning the next election,” he said. “I don’t care how they spin it, that’s what I believe is happening.”

Mar 19 - Protesters descend on Walnut Creek: Teens joins march to denounce Iraq war on conflict's fourth anniversary

 Body:

Jason B. Johnson

San Francisco Chronicle

Sunday, March 18, 2007

More than 1,000 people chanting “Hell no, Bush gotta go!” and singing protest songs marched through downtown Walnut Creek on Saturday to denounce the war in Iraq as it enters its fifth year.

They came from throughout Contra Costa County and as far away as Sacramento to mark Monday’s fourth anniversary of the war with a march and rally at Civic Center Park, where many made it clear that they believe the war must end.

“This is four years we’ve been in a needless war, and most people would rather forget about it and go play soccer on Saturday,” said Peter Gassner, 42, who marched with his 5-year-old son, Arin, on his shoulders. “If there were 1 million people out here, this war would stop.”

Passing cars honked in support of protesters carrying signs calling for the impeachment of President Bush and urging House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-San Francisco, to push Congress to cut off funding for the war. If anyone observing the demonstration supported the president, they kept quiet.

Most in the crowd were Baby Boomers or older, but teenagers were seen here and there in the rally organized by the Mount Diablo Peace and Justice Center. Although demonstrations against the war are planned today in San Francisco and elsewhere, many of those marching in Walnut Creek said it was important to show that there is opposition to the war in the suburbs as well.

“There are lots of people in the suburbs who are concerned about this,” said Elaine Dunlap, 66, from Walnut Creek, a semi-retired college teacher. “People think it’s just the radicals in Berkeley who are doing this.”

Gassner, the chief executive officer of a software firm in Pleasanton, marched with his wife and two children. “I’d like to teach my kids they have the responsibility to take action,” he said.

It was a lesson many youths at the demonstration took to heart. Among those in the crowd was a group of seniors from Alhambra High School in Martinez, who said it is important that their generation’s voice be heard.

“I do think teenagers care. It’s just that to an extent they feel helpless and hopeless,” said 17-year-old Kate Lewis, who organized classmates to attend the protest. “I’ve been recruiting my friends, and one of them in class said to me, ‘Why are you even bothering?’ But this is what democracy is.”

There was little support among those at the rally for the president’s plan to send as many as 30,000 additional troops to Iraq.

“He should be impeached, he’s a war criminal,” said Kathy Somers, 63, of Danville. “They’re bankrupted our country. We’re spending billions and billions on this stupid war.”

But the president is not without his supporters in central Contra Costa County and elsewhere in the Bay Area. Many of them prompted those who erected a politically charged war memorial overlooking the Lafayette BART station to remove the names of more than 200 dead U.S. soldiers and Marines affixed to the memorial’s 3,211 white wooden crosses.

Memorial organizers said Friday that all but a dozen names will be removed Sunday unless a service member’s family specifically allows the name to remain. The appearance of the names on the crosses — which have themselves been the source of some controversy — brought denunciations from relatives of some of the fallen and from those who support the president and the war.

Scott Conover of Tracy, whose stepson Brandon died in Iraq in January 2006, said memorial organizers “shouldn’t be using the dead soldiers to voice their opposition” to the war. He welcomed the decision to remove the names, but said he and others will visit the site Monday to ensure that the organizers keep their promise.
War anniversary demonstrations

Anti-war events planned for today and Monday:

Today

— San Francisco, noon march from Justin Herman Plaza to Civic Center, sponsored by Act Now to Stop War and End Racism.

Monday

— San Ramon, several groups are participating in a rally to protest Chevron Corp.’s role in the Iraq war, 7-11 a.m. at the oil company’s headquarters at 6001 Bollinger Canyon Road.

— San Francisco, a civil disobedience die-in and vigil against war funding, sponsored by the 1st Lt. Watada Support Group, noon, office of Sen. Dianne Feinstein, Market and Montgomery streets.

— San Francisco, several candlelight vigils marking the fourth anniversary of the Iraq war are planned by MoveOn: Market Street BART stations, 11:45 a.m.; San Francisco Federal Building, noon; corner of Lake Street and Park Presidio, 5 p.m.; Justin Herman Plaza, 6:45 p.m.; top of Bernal Hill, 7:15 p.m.

There will be a Die-In at the intersection of A Street and Park Blvd, in front of the City College, at 3 pm on Monday March 19th. Show your outrage in an outrageous manner. Be prepared to make a sacrifice in the name of all those who have sacrificed so much already.

Sidewalk support will be greatly needed too. There are plenty of “safe” events being sponsored around town, but I hope, for those of you who really want to make a stand, and take attention getting to the next level, will join us.

10/24 - The Daily Vanguard - Faculty member arrested, and it's not the first time

 Body:

PSU adjunct faculty member spent time in jail for activist work, but says he has no regrets

By Stover E. Harger III

October 24, 2006

Link to story in The Daily Vanguard

Tom Hastings stood before a judge in community court last week after being arrested for refusing to leave Senator Gordon Smith’s office in late September.

The judge asked him if he admits to refusing to leave the office and Hastings said that he not only refused to leave, but wanted recognition for it.

An author of many books and fixed-term faculty in the PSU Conflict Resolution department, Hastings said he is married to the peace movement. He said that his efforts for promoting peace stretch beyond just regular activism and go into many other areas. Hastings’ goal is to combine activism and academic work.

“I’m not claiming to be a big deal activist,” Hastings said. “My time is seriously devoted to teaching.”

Along with teaching, Hastings is a published author many times over (with a book coming out this month), a traveling lecturer, and the founder of the Portland Catholic Worker House where he also lives. He said his spare time is essentially spent the same way his professional life is spent. Hastings said writing for him is a form of therapy, albeit a very laborious one.

Hastings, who started teaching at Portland State in the spring of 2001, was arrested Sept. 21 outside of Smith’s office along with eight others, including PSU student Rachel Joy. He said they were asking the senator to sign a pledge for peace as part of the “Declaration of Peace Week” that ran from Sept. 21 to 29. He said it was a minor incident.

Hastings came to Portland State from a job directing Peace and Conflict Studies at Northland College in Wisconsin. When he decided he would move, he looked in a directory of peace studies programs and found that Portland was ranked second after Boston for the number of peace programs the city had.

Hastings said the peace studies program is constantly viewed as an unwanted stepchild to the university, but he sees it as very important.

“We offer as much to humanity as cancer research,” Hastings said.

Hastings was charged with a felony for property destruction in 1996 after personally cutting down three command center poles at a U.S. thermonuclear navy site with a handsaw. He beat a sentence of sabotage, but was convicted for three years on the charge of property destruction. He spent one year in prison, one in house arrest, and one in probation, which he served coincidently while teaching in Wisconsin.

“This is legally a crime and I did my time,” Hastings said, “but society doesn’t hold that view in reality.”

Hastings was sentenced for two months of community service last Tuesday for the incident at Smith’s office. He said he is avoiding jail time because of his responsibilities to teaching, even though he sees jail as a possibility. He said arrest is always a likely possibility.

“We are happy to go to court,” Hastings said. “Let’s put the war on trial.”

“Civil Resist Portland” is the group that organized the Smith office protest and consists of about 80 members in the Portland area.

Hastings said they have strict criteria of acceptable actions. He said their ultimate goal is to gain attention for the peace movement, but they will not lie to gain access to a building or give any more trouble to law enforcement officers than is necessary. He said when they are arrested they will go with the police willingly.

“As soon as they say ‘You’re under arrest,’ we leave with them,” Hastings said. “We won’t make them throw their backs out over us.”

All members must go through nonviolence training, sign a pledge and carry it with them at all times. The pledge details several items of behavior, such as no yelling, no treating anyone with disrespect and no weapons.

Hastings said he also does not agree with hiding your agenda or concealing your face while protesting. He said it alienates the mainstream when protesters are so confrontational.

“Without the support of mainstream America the movement will not succeed,” Hastings said. “I’m alienating enough as I am.”

Hastings said he has been traveling to conventions and seminars far too much lately, but will stop until next year. This last week he was just outside Buffalo, New York speaking at the “Concerned Philosophers for Peace” conference.

Hastings also serves as the co-chair of the National Peace and Justice Studies association. He is currently planning a conference to be held at Portland State in 2008 and has begun fundraising activities.

Hastings said his 12 years of experience as a single dad has helped him learn how to balance his busy lifestyle.

“They say if you want something done, ask a single mother,” Hastings said. “I’ve also acquired that ability by being a single dad for so long.”

10/9 - Santa Cruz, CA - Silent Peace Walk

 Body:

SILENT PEACE WALK. On Saturday morning, September 23, nearly 100 Santa Cruz peacemakers of varied cultures, ages, faiths, and peace affiliations, walked one hour together in silent solidarity for peace. Dressed in black or white, they carried flowers for remembrance, colorful peace flags, and earth flags. Their moving silence was accentuated by the occasional sound of Buddhist meditation bells. Specially adapted prayer flags memorialized the dead, with photos added of US soldiers lost, plus long lists of Iraqi civilian deaths in Arabic script. Participants wore stickers saying “I signed the Declaration of Peace” and explanatory flyers were distributed to passersby along the way. After moving through downtown along Pacific Avenue sidewalks, the procession culminated in a short, but powerful ceremony. In one large circle was unfurled the full length of a paper scroll 3 feet wide by over 140 feet long…a sea of names in Arabic script representing over 43,000 Iraqi civilians killed in the war (the most conservative estimate at that time). Deaths of US and Coalition forces were simultaneously remembered in Iraq Memorial kiosks presenting over 2000 names with color photographs, ages, hometowns, nationalities, etc. A simple altar honored sandy empty boots, surrounded with flowers and other peace offerings.

This action was sponsored by the Santa Cruz Buddhist Peace Fellowship on behalf of The Declaration of Peace, with the vision of embodying the peace that we all long for, while opening our hearts to remembering that each and every war death has a name, a face, a home, a story.

10/5 - Pasadena, Ca - DoP Vigil and 550 signers in "Lobby the People" DoP campaign

 Body:

On September 21st, the Foothills Peace Coalition and AFSC held a peaceful candlelight vigil in front of the military recruiting center in Pasadena, Ca., which is situated directly across the street from Pasadena City College. Approximately 60 -70 persons attended through the 3 hours that we stood vigil. Several students from the campus joined us. The atmosphere was wonderfully positive and communal as we closed with a circle and a moment of silence.

We had excellent local press coverage and even a mention in the Washington Post. See “Get Your Peace On” by Joe Piasecki in the Pasadena Weekly.

The Foothills Peace Coalition also chose to develop the Declaration of Peace Congressional Pledge into a petition for our 2 local representatives (Schiff, Dreier) and our 2 state senators (Boxer, Feinstein). We conceptualized our petition gathering as the “Lobby the People” campaign for DoP.

Our goal was to reach out beyond the “choir” to those folks who oppose the war and want the troops home but who are rarely heard from.

We gathered nearly 550 signatures by tabling at our local farmers’ markets, churches, municipal meetings, and by going door-to-door.

The petitions have been mailed to the Senators with a cover letter emphasizing the principles of the DoP campaign and including a copy of King’s “Letter from the Birmingham Jail”. We have scheduled meetings with our local representatives and will hand-deliver the petitions to them.

Several of our members supported the civil disobedience action of Peace Witness LA in Hollywood, Ca., on September 25th.

“Stand on the Corner for Peace” action drew friends, neighbors, and co-workers to busy street corners to hold signs during rush hour at over 30 intersections around Santa Cruz county, Friday 5-6 pm, 9.22.06. The experiment invited 4-6 participants at designated corners to hold signs such as “Culture of Life Means We Do Not Kill”, “War Causes Terrorism—Stop the War in Iraq”, and “Peace in Iraq”. Participants also gave leaflets to passers-by saying “End the U.S. Invasion of Iraq. Bring our troops home! Many activities are taking place nationally and locally as part of the ‘Declaration of Peace’ campaign. Join Us! Call your Senators at 202….” THE BEAUTY OF THIS ACTION WAS IT COULD TAKE PLACE AT SIMULTANEOUS CORNERS AROUND TOWN. In this way persons working until 5, could join a corner near their place of work, or others could vigil near their homes with neighbors. The goal was to build community with your neighbors and co-workers, while demonstrating opposition to the war in Iraq, in many locations around town.We heard that some folks passed as many as 4 or 5 of these corner protests as they drove home from work.

Candle Light Vigil for Peace in Pasadena was a success with more than 60 vigil supporters situated on both sides of Colorado Blvd. and directly in front of a military recruitment station. The vigil was well attended and members of the media were present.

Witness to Peace; Civil Disobedience to Save the Lives of our Children was attended by more than 60 people, members of Declaration of Peace Coalition including American Friends Service Committee, Veterans for Peace, United for Peace and Justice, Code Pink, Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace, Iraq Veterans Against the War, Student Peace Action Network, Catholic Worker, Coalition for World Peace, Foothills Peace Coalition, Whittier Area Peace and Justice Coalition, came out and peacefully expressed their opposition to the recruitment policies and practices of the Armed Services by declaring non violent civil disobedience in front of a recruitment station on Hollywood Blvd. More than 28 people risked arrest by blocking the doors to the center.

We were able to successfully close down the recruitment center for one entire day. Although we were willing to risk arrest to meet this end, we proved that we were able to accomplish this goal without arrests. Members of the media were present and we were able to march with coffins draped in American flags in a solemn procession down some of the most transited streets in Hollywood. We read aloud names of American soldiers as well as the names of the civilians who have been killed in Iraq and conducted a non-violent sit it at the front of the recruitment station on Hollywood Blvd.

Rally for Peace was a success that took place in Long Beach where a Vigil at the Long Beach Federal Building took place with more than 50 people in attendance, supporting the Declaration of Peace. AFSC coordinated with the Stop-the-War Ministry Team of First Congregational Church in Long Beach for this event and it was covered by the Press Telegram.

9/30 - Declare Peace in Huntington Beach

 Body:

Demonstration for Peace in Huntington Beach

“Declare Peace” Thursday evening at the intersection of Beach and Edinger Blvds., Huntington Beach, CA. Our purpose was to bring attention to the Declarartion of Peace.

It was a very positive response from those passing by us. There were 3 counter demonstrators, a few others with signs not consistent with the our purpose (I spoke with the ones I saw and wlecomed them to participate and explained that we were standing for peace and not against any personalities most were agreeable, one left and others stood on an opposite corner). There was a legal observer from the Lawyers Guild, no mainstream media, one student journalist. It was generally a positive response.

The question now - is there a sense to continue this vigil? Shall we do it once a week for a month and evaluate it at the end of a month? Are there a couple of us willing to take on some leadership if we have a sense to continue? Please let me know with an immediate reply to these questions, <!--

Blessings to all as we try to be people of peace.
