By Jenn McDowell
Sept. 24, 2006

NASHUA - Red, white and blue flags with the names of the 2,697 soldiers killed to date in the Iraq war adorned Library Hill during a two-hour vigil held Saturday by Nashua Peace.org.

Annie Tenyeri, a member of the group, said that the event was planned to “personalize” the war. “The idea was just to make people aware. They’re not just numbers, they’re real people,” she said.

Tanyeri’s 25-year old son, Bill, a college graduate who joined the Marine Corps Reserve, was sent overseas last March and will return in October.

Although she anticipates her son’s return, she said she feels a sense of selfishness because other mothers will soon be in her position. “My heart just breaks for the mothers of those kids,” she commented.

The group holds a vigil every Saturday in front of City Hall and every Wednesday outside of the Main Street off office of U.S. Rep. Charles Bass.

On Saturday, the group will join in a statewide Declaration of Peace March to the Statehouse in Concord. There will be musical entertainment as well as activities for children.
