Stop the War Funding

Dear Representative … ,

I am writing to let you know that I strongly object to Congress passing the 2009 Supplemental Appropriations bill, which would appropriate more than $84 billion for military spending.

This bill supports the escalation of U.S. military operations in Afghanistan, and perpetuates the U.S. military occupation of Iraq, in spite of promises by President Obama for a prompt troop draw down.

Lasting peace in Iraq and Afghanistan cannot be achieved through maintaining or increasing U.S. military involvement in these countries.

To the contrary, the U.S military presence in both Iraq and Afghanistan generates hostility towards the United States, and instigates instability and violence in those countries.

The U.S. military presence in Iraq and Afghanistan therefore does not increase our national security, it decreases it.

I do support long-term diplomatic, humanitarian, and economic development assistance that will lead to peace and stability in those countries. These efforts should be supported and separately funded.

However, I strongly object to combining funding for peaceful efforts with funding for war and military occupation, as the current Supplemental Appropriations bill does.

For all these reasons, I am writing to tell you to vote “NO” on the 2009 Supplemental Appropriations bill in its entirety.
