October 13th will be an optional all day pre-conference nonviolence training. Travelers can register anytime and take workshops in afternoon. Tuesday October 14th will be workshops on militarization, depleted uranium, how to speak to the “other side,” peace-promoting economics, and nonviolence training for all participants. Music celebration Tuesday night with Joe Jencks and Helena Nash. Wednesday is the fly-in arrival day of Hawgsmoke ‘08 (www.hawgsmoke.com); we’ll have a public witness, maybe a peace walk, and direct action with optional civil disobedience at Salina Regional Airport.

You are invitied to participate in Wage Peace of Jacksonville’s Peace Festival on Saturday, September 20th from 1:00 pm - 8:00 pm. titled “Flashback to the 60’s - Raising the Spirit of Peace and Love, Not War.” We will have food, vendors, and live music throughout the day.

It will be located on the grounds of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Jacksonville (UUCJ). We are seeking vendors, musicians and volunteers who would like to remember what “Feelin’ Groovy” is alot about. All music and vendor wares will be kept in the 60’s theme so come dressed in your favorite 60’s garb!

There will be a screening of the film IRAN (Is Not the Problem) at First Baptist Church of Palo Alto. The screening will be followed by a discussion led by Larry Everest, author of Oil, Power, and Empire, and Paul George, Director of Peninsula Peace and Justice Center.

IRAN (Is Not the Problem) is a new feature-length film responding to the failure of the American mass media to provide the public with relevant and accurate information about the standoff between the U.S. and Iran – as happened before in the lead-up to the invasion of Iraq.

We have heard that Iran is a nuclear menace defying the international community, bent on “wiping Israel off the map”, supporting terrorism, and unwilling to negotiate. This documentary disputes these claims as they are presented to us and puts them in the context of present and historical U.S. imperialism and hypocrisy with respect to Iran. It looks at the struggle for democracy inside Iran and the consequences of escalation and a potential U.S. and/or Israeli attack, and suggests some alternatives to consider.

The 79-minute documentary features Antonia Juhasz (The Bu$h Agenda), Larry Everest (Oil, Power, and Empire), and other activists and Iranian-Americans. There are differences of opinion between many of the voices in the film, but all agree that a war would be unjustified.

This event is wheelchair accessible.

On Sunday, October 19 at 7:30 p.m., there will be a screening of the documentary Considering Democracy at First Baptist Church of Palo Alto, followed by a discussion with the filmmaker, Keya Lea Horiuchi.

What does the rest of the world think of U.S. domestic and foreign policy? While the U.S. is perceived as a beacon of democracy, how does it compare to other democratic nations? Americans are continually told through the media that freedom and democracy are supported abroad, but is it true?

Shot in ten countries, Considering Democracy weaves together seemingly different topics into an interconnected tapestry of information. People from around the world act as a mirror for Americans to see a reflection of the political power of the United States.

The hour-length documentary brings views from around the world, mixing it with information and empowerment, including study and discussion menus to help people continue the dialog.
